| The ArtBlock project consisted of two 5 story buildings, ArtBlock West and ArtBlock East, containing 10 duplex townhouses, 12 loft style flats, 32 affordable artist live/work lofts available to households earning up to 80% of median income, underground parking and gallery space. The project was the first disposition of publicly owned land in Mayor Menio’s Artist Space Initiative, an effort designed to preserve the ability of individual artists to remain in the city despite skyrocketing real estate values. | |||

| Formally known as the Joshua Bates School, named for Joshua Bates, Boston financier and philanthropist, founding benefactor of the Boston Public Library. The school was designed by Arthur H. Vinal, a prominent Boston architect, who also designed Boston’s Orpheum Theatre and Center Theatre; and built in 1884. Originally an elementary school, converted to artists’ studio space more than two decades ago and finally refurbished for work-only artist’s studio space. | ||
